Stage2 Theatre Company presents
WHY IS JOHN LENNON WEARING A SKIRT? by Claire Dowie.
Stage 2 Theatre Company Collaborate with Award-Winning
writer/Performer/Poet/Comedian Claire Dowie
'Claire Dowie is the supreme advocate of rebellion' The Stage
Stage 2 is 'Birmingham at its best - inspired.' Head of English KEVI Aston
Following their hugely successful production of To Kill a Mockingbird, Stage
2 leave the classics for a term and return to the extremely contemporary
Claire Dowie, whose Adult Child Dead Child they presented to great acclaim
in 1999.
'A remarkable piece of writing. The triumph is that it is impossible to
imagine it was not written for them.' The Birmingham Post
We are enormously excited that Claire has given her permission for us to
adapt another of her monologues and even more excited that she will be
providing a voiceover for part of the production.
Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt? will be performed at
The Crescent Theatre, Brindleyplace
from Thursday 15th - Saturday 17th July at 7.30pm
with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm
Tickets £7.50 (£6.50conc)
from the CRESCENT THEATRE BOX OFFICE - (0121) 643-5858
Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt? is a fantastic exploration of
stereotyping - a journey through the life of a reluctant female - a life
that includes frustrated encounters with skirts, incredulous encounters with
tights and disastrous encounters with boys. The writing is fast and furious
and very, very funny.
Originally written as a monologue, the piece has been given the 'Stage 2
treatment' and reworked for a cast of over 100 who bring the perils of being
a teenager hilariously and sometimes horrifically to life, punctuated with
music from a live band. We see brownies, cookery lessons, the school dance,
the first date...'Don't want to be thought of as a tart or a chick or a bird
or a doll, a babe, a skirt, piece of crumpet, or even as a nice girl - even
being a nice girl sounds horrible.'
For this production we are combining Parts 1 and 2 of the text, focussing on
the hilarity of the early years. Claire's voiceover will provide a
reflection from the character later in her life when she is able to put
everything into perspective and has (quite literally) found her own voice.
Claire Dowie has always been a hero for Stage 2 members (and tutors). As
well as performing two full length versions of her plays members regularly
use her work for auditions and exams; 'What a perfect choice of piece. So
much character and so much skill. Your obvious enjoyment shone through every
line'. Examiner's Comments. The language and the themes are enormously
accessible and the writing appeals to established theatregoers and well as
first time attenders. Everyone will recognise the traumas and traits of
their friends, their family as well as themselves!
It is a real coup for the company that Claire has agreed to let us use the
text, will be returning to Birmingham (she is originally from King's
Heath!!) to take workshops with our members and will be leaving the legacy
of the voiceover!
